Thirteen participants completed a workshop on the restoration and establishment of nature trails in Sallinnguit \u2013 a popular trail in Sisimiut. Through a combination of theory and practical fieldwork, the participants gained concrete skills from landscape analysis to the construction, maintenance and restoration of nature trails – with a focus on protecting both natural and cultural heritage. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The purpose of the workshop aimed to strengthen local expertise in nature trail development in Greenland, particularly considering the growing tourism industry.<\/p>\n

The participants were introduced to principles and best practices in trail restoration, the protection of cultural resources, as well as the use of equipment and safety procedures related to trail work. The course combined theoretical instruction with practical work in the natural landscape, with the aim of strengthening local skills in trail construction. <\/p>\n

The course was conducted by Arctic Circle Business in collaboration with Arktisk Arkitekt, FRYDNREJN and the U.S. Department of the Interior \u2014 all specialists in this field. The collaboration with the U.S. Department of the Interior is part of a long-term project in Greenland that has been underway since 2020. The U.S. Department of the Interior draws on the work of the National Park Service and other bureaus, for their expertise in designing, restoring, and managing trails for tourism. Sallinnguit as a Practical Learning Area<\/strong>
\nThe course took place in the popular area of Sallinnguit in Sisimiut, where Arktisk Arkitekt, FRYDNREJN and Arctic Circle Business had developed an interpretive trail plan that locals and international visitors could enjoy.<\/p>\n

Sallinnguit is a nature area close to the town with significant cultural and historical importance. The area contains traces of Greenland\u2019s history \u2014 from Inuit culture and the heyday of whaling to more recent industrial and fishing communities. <\/p>\n

Well-designed trails can help guide where people walk and thereby reduce wear and tear on the natural environment and protect cultural sites. At the same time, trails can make areas of natural and cultural heritage more accessible to both local residents and visitors. <\/p>\n

At the workshop participants learned how to remove social trails through the construction of rock dams and revegetation techniques.<\/p>\n
