The site contains traces from several periods of both the town’s and Greenland’s history, including settlement sites, burial grounds, turf-walled houses, longhouses, a blacksmith’s workshop and artefacts from the Saqqaq culture. The area is considered to hold significant cultural heritage value, and its location gives it great potential to become a central destination for cultural and nature-based tourism in Destination Arctic Circle.

The area is already frequently visited by both local residents and tourists, as reflected in the visible wear and tear on the landscape and the deteriorating condition of existing interpretation facilities. Today, visitors move through several parts of the area without clear signage or guidance, and some even walk through ruins and enter burial grounds, which is in violation of heritage protection legislation.

Local skills and expertise to strengthen future nature and cultural heritage projects
An important part of Arctic Circle Business’ work is to develop and support the local business community. During the initial preparation of the project, it became clear that there is a need for specialised skills and expertise – both for this project and for future landscape projects, particularly in protected cultural and natural areas where tourism is expected to increase. This includes the construction of nature trails and stone steps, as well as the restoration and maintenance of natural and cultural landscapes.

For this reason, Arctic Circle Business organised a workshop this summer on the restoration and construction of nature trails in Sallinnguit. Participants received instruction in both the principles and practical aspects of trail restoration, heritage protection, and the use of equipment and safety procedures related to trail work. The course combined theory with hands-on work in the landscape, with the aim of strengthening local skills and expertise in trail construction.

Funding makes it possible to realise the plans for Sallinnguit
The funding from the foundations makes a multi-year programme of investigations and development possible.
